Charles Lister explains the many reasons as to why the fall of Aleppo does not mark the end of the Syrian conflict and details the Assad regime’s strategy of creating a “regime versus terrorists” dynamic in order to undermine the moderate Syrian opposition. Lister also explains that the regime and its allies will most likely focus on capturing opposition held pockets in Damascus’s suburbs as their next step, and then shift their focus to Idlib, which is controlled primarily by salafi-jihadi groups.
