Hassan Hassan provides a thoughtful article outlining the flaws of the Obama administration’s plan to have the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit’s (YPG) liberate Raqqa from the Islamic State. Just as it is flawed to send Shia militias into Mosul, Hassan argues the same applies to Raqqa with the YPG. Instead, Hassan argues that the liberation force for Raqqa should strike a balance between Arab and Kurdish units that will be able to effectively govern following the area’s liberation in order to prevent the emergence of al-Qaeda in these vacuums.
