Charles Lister asserts that moderate Syrian opposition groups are at their weakest since the start of the civil war. Al-Qaeda, under the guise of Jabhat Fatah al-Sham and more recently Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has been able to move previously more “moderate” rebel groups into their camp. In the near term, Lister states that al-Qaeda will only be an increasingly influential player in the Syrian conflict.
